Description:

Senecio serpens, scientifically known as Kleinia repens, is a low-growing or trailing succulent plant that typically doesn't exceed 30 cm in height. It features attractive, cylindrical, fleshy leaves with a bluish-green color and pointed tips. Small, cream-colored, and fragrant flowers bloom during the summer and early autumn.

History and Origin:

Native to dry regions, Senecio serpens, also called Kleinia repens, hails from areas like South Africa and Madagascar. It has become popular in gardening due to its decorative appearance and easy-care nature.

Care:

Senecio serpens is a low-maintenance plant. It prefers commercial cactus substrates or a mix of garden soil and coarse silica sand in a 50/50 ratio. Avoid overwatering by watering moderately in spring and summer, approximately every two weeks. In winter, reduce watering frequency to once every month and a half. It does not require additional fertilizers.

Watering:

It should be watered moderately in spring and summer, approximately every two weeks. In winter, reduce the frequency to once every month and a half to prevent root rot issues.

Sunlight and Temperature:

It tolerates full sun exposure and light shade. In very hot climates, it prefers semi-shade. However, it does not withstand frost below -3 °C, so it needs protection during winter, keeping it above 6 °C.

Propagation:

The best way to propagate Senecio serpens is through stem cuttings taken in spring or summer. It's a straightforward and effective method for obtaining new plants.

Pruning:

Light pruning can be done after flowering to control growth and maintain the desired shape.

Pests and Diseases:

With proper drainage to avoid overwatering, Senecio serpens usually doesn't encounter significant pest or disease issues. Ensuring adequate soil drainage will help prevent root rot problems.
