The Crassulaceae family includes the genus Crassula, which consists of more than 600 species of succulent plants, mostly from South Africa. Some species are: Crassula capitella, Crassula ovata, Crassula tetragona, Crassula arborescens, Crassula multicava, Crassula perforata, Crassula falcata, Crassula marnieriana, Crassula Buddha's Temple, Crassula conjuncta, Crassula muscosa or lycopodioides, Crassula erosula.

This plant has the common names of Red Flames and Bonfire Plant.

They are small succulent ground cover plants that do not usually reach 20 cm in height. They have showy green and red leaves with pointed tips, the shade of red varies according to the hours of sunlight they receive, the more intense the more sun they receive. In summer, spikes of small, slightly aromatic white flowers appear.

Capitella are often used in pots for patios, terraces and balconies, as houseplants and as ground cover plants for rockeries.

Crassula capitella can live in full sun and light shade; in the latter case the leaves will be bright green. Temperatures below 0°C are not suitable.

They need a very well-drained soil with coarse sand to which some well-decomposed leaf mould can be added. Transplanting or planting in its final place is best done in spring.

They are drought-resistant plants so watering should be moderate and wait until the substrate is dry before watering again. Watering should be almost completely eliminated during the winter as the plant goes into dormancy; if grown in pots, it can be watered once a month during this period.

These plants do not need pruning or fertiliser.

The only thing to watch out for is excessive watering (it can rot the plant) as they are not usually attacked by pests and diseases.

They propagate well from cuttings taken in the summer season.
