Kumquat o citrus x fortunella or dwarf orange tree is an evergreen tree which belongs to the rutaceaes family.
It is a very decorative plant as it is a small tree with small oval orange color fruits, which stays for long time in the tree. It has a slow growing.
This fruit is small, between 2-4 cms and edible, being its peel the most sweet part of it.
The tree needs direct sun to thrive and a rich and very well drained soil.
We can prune our kumquat once the fruit is over but before the new flowers sprout. We will get rid of suckers, of weak, broken or damaged branches, and also from those branches which will avoid the air to circulate properly in the tree. At the same time we will trim our tree to give a nice shape.
It is recommended that we use a special citrus fertilizer.
Citrus fortunella can be attacked for aphids and scales, and also by fungus in the roots in the case that they do not have a proper drain system.
