Achillea millefolium, commonly known as Yarrow, is an elegant perennial wildflower that produces abundant, flat clusters, up to 12 cm in diameter, packed with 20 to 25 flowers in various colors. This species grows on tall stems above aromatic, disease-resistant, fern-like green foliage.
Description and Characteristics:
Both the flowers and foliage of Yarrow are attractive and long-lasting, making it an excellent garden plant and a popular choice for meadows. It blooms for weeks from early to late summer, effortlessly brightening any sunny corner of the garden. Its robust, upright clumps can reach heights of 60 to 90 cm and widths of 30 to 45 cm.
Care:
Yarrow is easy to care for, tolerating drought, heat, humidity, deer, and rabbits. It thrives best in full sun with moderately moist, well-drained soil. While it tolerates light shade, its best coloration and flowering occur in full sun. Avoid rich, overly moist soils that may cause excessive growth.
Uses and Curiosities:
Yarrow is vital in herbaceous borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, coastal landscapes, meadows, and floral arrangements. It attracts butterflies and can extend its flowering by deadheading to prolong the season and prevent uncontrolled seed spreading.
Origin and History:
Native to Europe, western Asia, and North America, Achillea millefolium holds a place of significance in summer gardens. Its name, Aquilea, is derived from Achilles, a hero in Greek mythology who reputedly used this plant to stop bleeding and heal wounds.
This versatile, easily propagated perennial comes in a wide range of sizes and colors, providing lasting, charming beauty to the garden throughout the summer season.
