Description
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Stricta’ is an upright, clump-forming perennial grass known for its clean vertical shape and fine texture. It develops narrow, arching leaves that grow in a tight, upward habit, creating an elegant and structured silhouette. Throughout the season, the foliage shifts from soft green tones to warmer, golden shades, adding interest as the year progresses. It works well in modern gardens, natural-style plantings, and mixed borders.
History and Curiosity
Miscanthus has been used for decades in ornamental landscaping due to its height, movement, and year-round structure. The ‘Stricta’ variety was selected for its more compact and upright growth, making it ideal for linear plantings, architectural beds, and designs that rely on strong vertical accents. In many countries, it is valued for its winter appeal, as the dried foliage maintains its form and adds texture even in the colder months.
Origin
This species originates from East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea, where it grows naturally in open meadows and slopes. It is adapted to climates with marked seasons and performs well in both cold and moderately warm areas.
Care
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Stricta’ requires good light to maintain its upright habit. It thrives in full sun but can also grow in light partial shade. It prefers fertile, well-drained soils but adapts to poorer conditions once established. It is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that tolerates wind, temperature variations, and a range of soil types.
Watering
Water moderately. During the first months, keep the soil evenly moist to help the plant root properly. Once established, it can tolerate short dry periods, although it will develop better if the soil is allowed to stay slightly moist. Increase watering in summer and reduce it significantly in winter.
Pruning
Pruning is carried out once a year, usually at the end of winter. Cut back the dried foliage to about 10–15 cm above the ground to encourage strong new growth in spring. During the rest of the year, only remove damaged or broken leaves if necessary.
