Description
Phormium ‘Pink Flamingo’ is an ornamental variety known for its colourful foliage, combining shades of green, cream and soft pink. It forms arching, elegant clumps that keep their colour all year round. Strong, versatile and low-maintenance, it performs well both in gardens and in large containers.
History & Curiosity
Phormium has long been valued in landscaping for its tough, upright leaves and its tolerance to wind. Traditionally, different species of Phormium were used in New Zealand to produce a very durable fibre, commonly known as New Zealand flax.
Origin
This plant originates from New Zealand, where it naturally grows in coastal meadows, damp areas and windy slopes. Its native habitat explains its resilience and its ability to adapt to different climates.
Care
Phormium is easy to grow and highly adaptable. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, although its colours are more intense with good light. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil that stays slightly moist, but it can also tolerate short dry periods once established. It works well in Mediterranean-style gardens, rock gardens and patios.
Watering
Regular watering is recommended during the first months to help the plant root properly. Once established, it becomes more drought-tolerant, though it keeps better colour and freshness with moderate, consistent watering. In containers, check the soil often to ensure it doesn’t dry out completely.
Pruning
This variety doesn’t require heavy pruning. Simply remove any dry or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy. If the clump becomes too large over time, you can divide it and replant the offsets.
