Asclepias curassavica

Origin
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. It is now naturalised in many warm climates around the world.

History
Commonly known as tropical milkweed or bloodflower, it has long been valued as an ornamental plant and for its ecological importance, serving as a host plant for several butterfly species.

Curiosity
It is one of the preferred plants for monarch butterflies to lay their eggs. The plant produces a milky sap (latex) in its stems, which acts as a natural defence mechanism.

Care
A perennial in warm climates, though it may behave as an annual in areas with cold winters. It requires full sun for abundant flowering and prefers well-drained soils.

Watering
Moderate. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but benefits from regular watering during summer to maintain continuous blooming.

Pruning
Light pruning helps encourage new blooms and maintain a compact shape. In mild climates, cut back at the end of winter to promote fresh spring growth.
