Philodendron xanadu is native to the tropical region of Brazil. Philodendron xanadu belongs to the family Araceae and is of the genus of herbaceous climbing plants.
The plant is of the bush type with a medium fast growth, compact, rounded and wide. The philodendron xanadu has deeply dissected lobed leaves up to 40 cm long with bright green leaves.
It receives other common names such as vine, monkey banana, philodendron, güembé, huambe, snake wood, tripeperro or tapir. The philodendron xanadu forms dense groups of up to 1.5 metres high by 2 metres wide.
They develop a short trunk that produces aerial roots, which extend along the surface of the soil. It is a plant with more than 160 species and a large number of varieties including hybrids.
Location:
It likes bright sunlight, but indirectly, the plant should be placed in a position near a window where the sun's rays never really touch the foliage.
If it receives too much sun, its leaves will turn yellow. For proper development, it needs warm and humid temperatures. It can survive in the garden if winter temperatures are no lower than twelve or fifteen degrees.
Flowering:
They usually give wine and lilac coloured flowers.
Watering:
It requires regular watering in spring and in summer when the temperatures are high, but it is necessary to keep the soil slightly humid, but not waterlogged, in autumn and winter distance the watering.
In interiors it needs environmental humidity, therefore a container with gravel or wet clay balls can be used so that the water when evaporating increases the humidity of the plant.
Pruning:
In general, the philodendron xanadu needs little care to develop vigorously. It is recommended to conduct the first branches and fertilize every six months.
Remove the fallen leaves.
Fertilizer and soil:
It requires a loose and spongy substrate. The ideal substratum for the plant can be made up of 100% peat. But mixtures with peat-vermiculite or peat-perlite are also excellent for philodendron xanadu.
Also to keep the substrate of philodendron xanadu in good shape, it is necessary to fertilize it with a granulated fertilizer in the beginning of spring, mid-summer and autumn.
We recommend the monthly use of a special liquid fertilizer for green plants grown in pots, during the growing season. In winter it is preferable not to fertilize.
Diseases:
This plant isn't very prone to the attack of pests and diseases, but some aphids and cotton mealybugs can appear.
Once a plague is detected it is necessary to clean it with cotton moths soaked in alcohol.
Also, the plant should be washed periodically with water and insecticide soap applied which will help keep pests at bay. It is necessary to take care of this species of plant against excessive watering, which can cause fungal diseases.
