Description:

Viburnum odoratissimum, also known as sweet viburnum or "copertor," is a small evergreen shrub or tree that can grow between 3 and 6 meters tall. Its leaves are glossy green with a leathery texture. It produces small, white, fragrant flowers arranged in clusters during the spring, which later develop into red berries that turn black as they mature.

Origin:

This shrub is native to Asia, particularly southeastern China and Japan. Its popularity has spread across different regions due to its hardiness and the ornamental beauty it brings to gardens.

History:

Viburnum odoratissimum has been appreciated for centuries in ornamental gardening for its shiny foliage, resilience, and fragrant flowers. It is commonly used in hedges, borders, and as a covering plant due to its ability to form dense foliage that provides privacy and wind protection.

Curiosities:

One of the most interesting features of this shrub is its strong floral fragrance, which is most noticeable at night and in the early morning hours. Additionally, its berries attract various bird species, making Viburnum odoratissimum a valuable plant for promoting biodiversity in gardens.

Care:

Sweet viburnum is a hardy and easy-to-care-for plant. It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter but can adapt to a variety of soil types. It tolerates both partial shade and full sun, though for optimal growth, it is best to plant it in an area with good sun exposure.

Watering:

It is important to keep the soil moderately moist, especially during the first few years of growth. Once the plant is well-established, it becomes more drought-tolerant but still benefits from regular watering, particularly during hot or prolonged dry periods.

Pruning:

Viburnum odoratissimum responds well to pruning, making it an excellent choice for forming hedges and formal borders. Pruning is recommended at the end of winter or early spring before new growth begins. It’s also useful to remove dead or diseased branches to keep the plant healthy and vigorous.
