Description

The Schlumbergera, commonly known as the Christmas Cactus, is a trailing succulent with segmented, flat green stems. In winter, it produces an abundance of vibrant flowers in shades of pink, red, white, orange, or fuchsia, making it a favorite for festive decorations.

History and Origin

Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, Schlumbergera grows epiphytically on tree trunks, taking advantage of the humidity in the environment. Introduced to Europe in the 19th century, it quickly became popular as an ornamental plant due to its winter blooming period.

Care

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some shade, but better lighting encourages flowering. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, as it may scorch the leaves.
• Soil: Light, well-draining soil, ideally a cactus mix with peat and perlite.
• Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 25°C (59°F - 77°F). It is not frost-tolerant.
• Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity levels. In dry climates, occasional misting is recommended.

Unlike most cacti, Schlumbergera does not grow in deserts but in tropical forests, meaning its water and humidity needs are different. To encourage blooming, reduce light exposure and lower the temperature in autumn.

Watering

Water moderately when the soil feels dry to the touch. During flowering, maintain consistent watering without overwatering. Reduce watering frequency in winter to prevent excess moisture.

After flowering, trim stem segments to encourage a more compact growth and promote future blooms.
