Description

A sun-loving perennial with an upright habit, reaching 60 to 90 cm in height. It produces long, showy spikes of small pink flowers over aromatic green foliage. Blooms from early summer through early autumn and is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

History & Curiosity

Agastache species have long been admired for both ornamental and medicinal uses. Native American tribes traditionally used their aromatic, anise-scented leaves for herbal teas and remedies. Today, their resilience and pollinator-friendly nature make them popular in natural and drought-tolerant gardens.

Care

• Light: Full sun

• Soil: Well-drained, sandy or rocky soil; tolerates poor soil conditions

• Climate: Heat and drought tolerant once established; sensitive to excessive winter moisture

• Bloom time: Summer to early fall

• Ideal for: Sunny borders, wildlife gardens, Mediterranean-style gardens, pots, and xeriscaping

Watering

Low to moderate. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Once established, Agastache needs very little irrigation.

Pruning

• Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage continued blooming.

• Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to promote fresh, compact growth.
