Description

Dichondra Silver, botanically known as Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’, is a perennial plant with a trailing or creeping habit, highly valued for its silvery foliage. Its fine, flexible stems can spread widely and are covered with small, rounded, soft leaves in a silver-grey colour. It is widely used in hanging baskets, planters, walls, and mixed arrangements because of the light and elegant effect it creates.

Origin

Dichondra argentea is native to warm and dry areas of America, especially the southern United States and Mexico, where it grows in sunny, well-drained ground.

History

Over time, it has become a very popular ornamental plant because of its silver colour and trailing growth habit. The variety ‘Silver Falls’ is especially valued in outdoor decoration for its ability to soften containers and create contrast with flowering plants or deeper green foliage.

Care

It is a hardy plant and quite easy to maintain.

  • Light: prefers full sun or very bright conditions.
  • Soil: needs a light and well-drained substrate.
  • Position: ideal for hanging baskets, planters, rockeries, walls, and as a ground cover in mild climates.
  • Resistance: tolerates heat and periods of drought quite well once established.

Watering

Watering should be moderate.

  • It is best to let the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
  • It tolerates lack of water better than excess moisture.
  • It is important to avoid waterlogging.

Pruning

Pruning is simple and helps keep its shape.

  • The stems can be trimmed back if the plant grows too much or loses density.
  • Dry or damaged parts should be removed.
  • A light trim helps it look more compact and tidy.

Curiosity

One of the most striking qualities of Dichondra Silver is its silvery colour, which reflects light beautifully and combines easily with other plants. This is why it is often used to add contrast and movement to outdoor plant arrangements.
