Description

Astilbe arendsii is a highly ornamental perennial plant valued for its elegant foliage and its feathery, airy, and very decorative flower plumes. It forms compact clumps with green, divided, slightly toothed leaves, and during the flowering season it produces dense spikes in shades ranging from white to pink or soft red, depending on the variety. Within this group, ‘Washington’ is usually known for its white flowers, while ‘Erika’ stands out for its pink tones.

Origin

Astilbe species originate from Asia and North America, although Astilbe arendsii refers to a group of ornamental hybrids developed in horticulture from several species within the genus.

History

Astilbes became very popular in ornamental gardening because of their ability to provide colour and texture in cool, partially shaded areas. The Arendsii group takes its name from the horticultural breeding work that gave rise to many of the varieties most widely grown today, valued for their compact habit and abundant flowering.

Care

It is a very decorative plant, ideal for fresh, bright gardens without strong direct sun.

• Soil: needs fertile, fresh soil with good moisture retention, but also good drainage.
• Position: ideal for cool borders, beds, sheltered patios, or pots.
