Cherimoya Tree (Annona cherimola)

Description:
The cherimoya is a deciduous fruit tree highly valued for its sweet, creamy, and aromatic fruit. With a medium growth rate and rounded shape, it adapts well to temperate climates. Its fruit, the cherimoya, stands out for its white pulp and tropical flavor.

Origin:
Native to the high tropical regions of Peru and Ecuador, the cherimoya was cultivated by Andean civilizations long before the arrival of Europeans. Its name comes from the Quechua word "chirimuya", referring to its ability to germinate in mild climates.

History:
Over time, the cultivation of cherimoya spread throughout Central America, southern Spain, and other regions with mild winters. It was introduced to Europe in the 18th century and has shown excellent adaptation to Mediterranean climates, especially along the Andalusian coast.

Care:
Cherimoya trees require fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. They prefer full sun or light partial shade. Sensitive to intense cold, they need protection from frost.

Watering:
Regular watering is necessary, especially in spring and summer. Avoid both waterlogging and prolonged drought. In winter, reduce watering frequency depending on rainfall.

Interesting fact:
Cherimoya was once described by writer Mark Twain as “the most delicious fruit known to man.” Its texture and flavor make it a favorite for fresh eating, desserts, smoothies, and ice creams.

Pruning:
Pruning is done in winter when the tree is dormant. Remove dead, crossing, or poorly oriented branches, and maintain an open structure to allow light and improve fruit production. A light summer pruning can also help balance the canopy.
