Catharanthus ‘Soirée’

Description

Catharanthus ‘Soirée’ is an ornamental series of Catharanthus roseus, highly valued for its compact habit, heat tolerance, and abundant flowering. It has glossy green oval leaves and simple five-petalled flowers in shades ranging from white to pink, red, violet, or bicolour combinations, depending on the variety. It is widely used in pots, planters, borders, and sunny flower beds because of its ability to flower for a long time.

Origin

Catharanthus roseus is native to Madagascar, although today it is cultivated in many warm regions of the world. The ‘Soirée’ series is a horticultural selection developed for its ornamental value.

History

Madagascar periwinkle has been grown for many years both for its ornamental interest and for its adaptation to warm climates. Over time, series such as ‘Soirée’ have been developed to offer more compact, uniform, and floriferous plants, especially suitable for seasonal gardening and container growing.

Care

It is a hardy and fairly easy plant to maintain in good conditions.

  • Light: needs full sun or plenty of light.
  • Soil: prefers a light, well-drained substrate.
  • Position: ideal for pots, planters, borders, and sunny areas.
  • Resistance: tolerates heat well and performs very nicely in summer.

Watering

Watering should be moderate.

  • It benefits from regular watering, especially in pots.
  • It is best to let the top layer of the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
  • It is important to avoid waterlogging.

Pruning

Pruning is simple and mainly for maintenance.

  • Faded flowers and dry parts can be removed.
  • If the plant loses its shape, it can be given a light trim.
  • A little maintenance helps keep it more compact and floriferous.

Curiosity

One of the most interesting qualities of Catharanthus ‘Soirée’ is its ability to keep flowering well during hot weather, when many other plants struggle more. Its compact size also makes it very practical for adding colour to terraces, balconies, and entrances.
