Pericallis Mandala – Pericallis × hybrida
Description
Pericallis Mandala is a compact, highly floriferous ornamental plant belonging to the Pericallis × hybrida group, also known as florist’s cineraria. It stands out for its abundant daisy-like flowers, which can appear in vivid shades of blue, violet, pink, red, white, or bicolour combinations. Its rounded, dense shape makes it very decorative for pots, planters, and seasonal arrangements.
Origin
Cultivated Pericallis varieties originate from species native to the Canary Islands and Madeira, although modern commercial lines such as the Mandala series are horticultural hybrids developed for ornamental gardening.
History
Florist’s cineraria has long been grown as a seasonal ornamental plant because of its strong visual impact during the cooler months of the year. The Mandala series is part of these horticultural selections, bred to offer compact, uniform plants with bright and showy flowering, widely used in nurseries and sheltered outdoor decoration.
Care
It is a very eye-catching plant, but it appreciates cool and stable conditions.
- Light: prefers bright light without strong direct sun or light partial shade.
- Soil: needs a fertile, fresh, and well-drained substrate.
- Position: ideal for pots, planters, bright patios, and sheltered areas.
- Temperature: performs best in mild or cool temperatures and usually does not tolerate strong heat well.
Watering
Watering should be regular.
- The substrate should be kept slightly moist.
- It should not be allowed to dry out completely, but it should also not become waterlogged.
- During flowering, it needs fairly consistent watering to stay at its best.
Pruning
Pruning is simple and mainly for maintenance.
- Faded flowers should be removed to keep the plant looking neat.
- Dry or damaged leaves should also be taken off.
- A light trim can be given if it loses its shape after flowering.
Curiosity
One of the most interesting qualities of Pericallis Mandala is that it brings plenty of colour during the cooler seasons, when fewer plants are in bloom. Its compact shape also makes it a very practical option for decorating tables, entrances, balconies, or bright corners with a very striking effect.
