Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

Description

Vetiver is a perennial ornamental grass with an elegant, upright growth habit and long, narrow deep-green leaves. It forms dense, compact clumps and is highly resistant to heat and wind. It is especially valued for its extremely deep root system.

Origin

Native to South Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka. Today it is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

History

Traditionally grown for its aromatic roots, Vetiver has been used for centuries in perfumery and natural medicine. Its essential oil is highly prized in the cosmetic industry. In many countries, it is also planted for soil protection and erosion control.

Curiosity

Vetiver’s root system can reach several meters deep, making it exceptionally effective for stabilising slopes and reinforcing soil. Unlike many other grasses, it is non-invasive because it does not spread through aggressive rhizomes.

Care

Requires full sun for optimal growth. It adapts well to poor, sandy or even clay soils, provided they are well-drained. It is extremely tolerant of heat, wind and dry conditions.

Watering

Moderate watering during the first year to encourage strong root establishment. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal irrigation, especially in Mediterranean climates.

Pruning

Cut back foliage at the end of winter or early spring to stimulate fresh growth and maintain a compact shape. It does not require frequent pruning.
