History & Fun Fact
Centrathus ruber has been grown for centuries in Mediterranean gardens due to its resilience and long blooming season. It's commonly found on old walls, rocky slopes, and roadsides, which makes it a favourite for low-maintenance gardens. Despite its name, it is not the same as Valeriana officinalis, the medicinal valerian.
Care
-
Light: Full sun. It tolerates partial shade but blooms best with plenty of sunlight.
-
Soil: Light, well-drained soil, even poor or stony ground. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soil.
-
Climate: Drought-tolerant and resistant to mild frosts once established.
-
Blooming period: Late spring to early autumn, especially when deadheaded.
-
Ideal for: Mediterranean gardens, gravel beds, rockeries, large pots, walls, and low-maintenance landscapes.
Watering
Moderate watering. Once established, it is drought-tolerant. Water only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering should be avoided, as it may cause root rot.
Pruning
Deadhead spent flower clusters after the main bloom to encourage a second flush. In late autumn or early winter, cut back the plant to maintain a compact, tidy shape.
