Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’
Description
Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’ is a compact and highly ornamental variety of the Mediterranean fan palm. It is characterised by its low, dense growth habit and stiff, fan-shaped leaves in a deep green tone. Compared to the common Chamaerops humilis, its leaves are shorter, more orderly and it has very few spines, making it ideal for domestic gardens and high-traffic areas.
History
‘Vulcano’ is a modern horticultural selection developed from the species Chamaerops humilis to enhance its ornamental value. The aim was to create a palm with fewer spines, a more compact shape and a cleaner overall appearance, while maintaining the hardiness of the original species.
Origin
Like the species itself, its botanical origin lies in the western Mediterranean, covering southern Europe and North Africa. The ‘Vulcano’ variety was selected and popularised mainly in Italy, where it quickly became appreciated for Mediterranean and urban landscaping projects.
Curiosity
-
Chamaerops humilis is one of the very few palm species native to Europe.
-
Unlike the standard form, ‘Vulcano’ is almost spineless, which makes it especially suitable for family gardens.
-
Its slow growth rate contributes to its longevity and structural stability, making it a long-term landscape plant.
Care
-
Light: full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages a more compact form.
-
Soil: well-drained soil; tolerates poor, sandy and calcareous soils.
-
Hardiness: highly resistant to heat, wind and drought; also tolerant of moderate frost (down to approx. –10 °C).
-
Use: ideal for Mediterranean gardens, rock gardens, large containers and low borders.
Watering
-
First year: regular watering to support root establishment.
-
Established plants: moderate watering; very drought tolerant.
-
In pots: slightly more frequent watering, always avoiding waterlogging.
???? Excess water is the main cause of problems.
Pruning
-
Minimal pruning required.
-
Remove only dry or damaged leaves, preferably at the end of winter or early spring.
-
Avoid excessive pruning, as keeping healthy green leaves helps maintain vigour and its compact appearance.
