Prunus armeniaca (Apricot tree)
Origin
The apricot tree originates from Central Asia, although its name refers to Armenia, from where it spread to the Mediterranean basin and Europe.
History
Cultivated for thousands of years, it was introduced to Europe by the Greeks and Romans. It quickly became established in Mediterranean areas due to its adaptability and the quality of its fruit.
Curiosity
It flowers very early, often before the leaves appear. This early bloom makes it visually striking in spring but also vulnerable to late frosts.
Care
A medium-sized fruit tree that needs full sun to produce sweet, high-quality fruit. It prefers light, deep, well-drained soils. It does not tolerate waterlogging and is sensitive to excess humidity.
Watering
Moderate. Regular watering is recommended during growth and fruiting, especially in dry climates. Reduce watering in autumn and winter to avoid root problems.
Pruning
Pruning is mainly carried out in winter during dormancy. The aim is to open up the canopy, remove dry or crossing branches, and encourage fruit production. Light maintenance pruning can be done in summer if needed.
