Phormium ‘Sundowner’

Description

Phormium ‘Sundowner’ is a highly decorative ornamental variety valued for its long, rigid, arching leaves in shades of bronze-green, with margins in copper pink, salmon, or cream, which can vary slightly depending on the season and light exposure. It forms dense, striking clumps with a strong architectural shape, making it stand out in contemporary, Mediterranean, and coastal gardens.

Origin

The genus Phormium is native to New Zealand, and ‘Sundowner’ is an ornamental cultivar developed from this group, usually associated with Phormium tenax or related hybrids.

History

Phormiums have long been cultivated for their ornamental value because of their sword-like leaves and their strong performance in mild-climate gardens. The variety ‘Sundowner’ became especially popular for its changing foliage colours and for its use as a focal plant in pots, gravel gardens, and outdoor planting schemes.

Care

It is a hardy and fairly easy plant to maintain when grown in the right conditions.

  • Light: grows well in full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: prefers well-drained soil.
  • Position: ideal for large pots, borders, gravel gardens, modern gardens, and coastal areas.
  • Climate: performs best in mild climates and does not always cope well with severe cold or prolonged winter wetness.

Watering

Watering should be moderate.

  • During the first period after planting, it benefits from more regular watering.
  • Once established, it tolerates dry periods quite well.
  • In containers, it will need more attention, especially in summer.
  • It is important to avoid waterlogging.

Pruning

Pruning is simple and mainly for maintenance.

  • Dry or damaged leaves should be removed from the base.
  • It does not need formative pruning.
  • If the clump becomes too large, it can be divided over time.

Curiosity

One of the most striking features of ‘Sundowner’ is that the colour of its leaves can shift between bronze, green, pink, and cream, making it highly decorative even when not in flower. It is also widely used as a focal point in gardens because of its sculptural appearance.
