Juniperus horizontalis ‘Old Gold’

Description
Juniperus horizontalis ‘Old Gold’ is a low-growing evergreen conifer, highly valued for its compact habit and bright golden foliage. Its branches spread gracefully to form a dense, soft mat of color that remains attractive throughout the year. Ideal for ground cover, borders, slopes, and rock gardens, this juniper brings texture and warmth to any outdoor space.

Origin and history
Native to North America, Juniperus horizontalis naturally grows in rocky and cold areas. The ‘Old Gold’ variety was developed in the 1960s as an ornamental improvement, selected for its intense golden color that persists even in winter. Since then, it has become one of the most popular ground-cover conifers for low-maintenance gardens.

Curiosity
A unique feature of Juniperus ‘Old Gold’ is that its golden color becomes even brighter when exposed to full sun. Its resinous fragrance also acts as a natural insect repellent, making it an excellent choice for Mediterranean and coastal gardens.

Watering
Once established, Juniperus horizontalis ‘Old Gold’ is very drought-tolerant. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During the first few months after planting or in very hot climates, increase the watering frequency until the roots are well developed.

Pruning
This plant requires little to no pruning. Light trimming in late winter or early spring helps maintain its shape and control its spread. Avoid heavy pruning, as the plant does not easily regenerate from old wood.

Care
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate excessive humidity or standing water. Perfect for dry gardens, rockeries, slopes, and mixed borders with other conifers, lavenders, or santolinas. Resistant to heat, cold, and salinity, it thrives beautifully in coastal landscapes.
