Pericallis × hybrida
Description
Pericallis × hybrida is a highly ornamental plant valued for its large, daisy-like flowers and vivid colours. It offers an impressive range of shades — blue, violet, pink, red, white and bi-colours — which stand out against its dark green, broad and slightly velvety foliage. The plant has a compact, rounded habit, making it ideal for pots, planters and bright indoor spaces.Origin
This is a horticultural hybrid derived from species of the genus Pericallis, native to the Canary Islands, where they grow naturally in cool and humid environments.History
Pericallis × hybrida, traditionally known as florist’s cineraria, was developed through selective breeding to enhance flower size, colour intensity and plant uniformity. Its ornamental cultivation became widespread in Europe during the 19th century, especially as a winter and early spring flowering plant.Curiosity
Although often grown as a seasonal plant, under the right conditions it can maintain its flowers for several weeks or even months. It is particularly valued for its naturally intense blue tones, which are uncommon among flowering plants.Care
It prefers very bright locations without direct sunlight. Cool temperatures are essential, ideally between 10 and 18 °C. Excessive heat significantly shortens the flowering period. Indoors, it should be kept away from heaters and other heat sources.Watering
Water regularly to keep the substrate slightly and consistently moist. It does not tolerate waterlogging or prolonged dryness. Always water the soil directly, avoiding wetting the leaves and flowers.Pruning
No structural pruning is required. Removing faded flowers and damaged leaves helps extend flowering and keeps the plant looking neat and healthy.
