Description
Euonymus japonicus 'Aureus' is an evergreen shrub known for its dense foliage and striking bicolor leaves. The foliage features glossy, leathery leaves with deep green centers and golden-yellow edges. It has a compact, upright growth habit and can reach 1.5 to 2 meters in height if left unpruned. Thanks to its versatility, it's commonly used in hedges, borders, group plantings, or as a stand-alone specimen in containers or garden beds.
Origin and history
Native to Japan, Korea, and parts of China, Euonymus japonicus was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant in the 19th century. It quickly gained popularity due to its year-round structure, resistance, and decorative value. The 'Aureus' variety was selected for its variegated foliage and is now one of the most widely used cultivars in Mediterranean and urban gardens.
Watering
Moderate watering is recommended. During the first months after planting, the soil should be kept slightly moist, but never soggy. Once established, this plant tolerates dry conditions quite well. In hot climates, occasional watering during summer is beneficial. Container-grown specimens require more frequent watering and good drainage.
Pruning
This shrub responds very well to pruning and can be easily shaped to control size and form. Prune at the end of winter or late summer to encourage compact, bushy growth. Ideal for low hedges or geometric shapes, as it tolerates regular trimming without losing density or vigor. Light pruning encourages fresh, vibrant new leaves.
