Prunus domestica (Plum tree)
Origin
The European plum tree originates from Western Asia and the Caucasus region. From there it spread throughout Europe and the Mediterranean basin, adapting well to different climates.
History
It is one of the oldest fruit trees cultivated by humans. It was already known in Classical Antiquity and became widely grown in Europe both for fresh consumption and for producing dried plums (prunes).
Curiosity
There are many varieties of Prunus domestica, with fruits that vary in colour, size and flavour. Many are self-fertile, although yields usually improve when other plum trees are nearby.
Care
A medium-sized fruit tree that requires full sun for good fruit production. It prefers deep, fertile and well-drained soils. It tolerates moisture better than other stone fruit trees, but not prolonged waterlogging.
Watering
Moderate and regular, especially during flowering and fruit development. In dry summers, watering frequency should be increased, reducing it again in autumn and winter.
Pruning
Pruning is carried out in winter, when the tree is dormant. It should focus on opening up the canopy, removing dead or crossing branches and maintaining a balanced structure. Light maintenance pruning can be done in summer if needed.
