Description

Equisetum hyemale, also known as Japanese horsetail or winter horsetail, is a perennial plant with upright, segmented green stems. It brings a clean, architectural look to humid garden areas, ponds or large containers. It keeps its structure all year round and is a very hardy, low-maintenance plant.

History & Curiosity

The genus Equisetum is one of the oldest plant groups on Earth. It is considered a “living fossil,” as it already existed in the time of the dinosaurs. A curious fact: its stems contain natural silica, which was traditionally used to polish wood and metals by hand.

Origin

This species comes from cool, humid regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows naturally in Europe, Asia and North America, especially in marshes, riverbanks and waterlogged soils where constant moisture is essential.

Care

Equisetum hyemale needs good light and grows well in partial shade or full sun. It thrives in soils that remain constantly moist and can even live with its roots partially submerged. It tolerates cold climates and frost without issues, adapting easily to different environments.

Watering

This plant requires continuous moisture and does not tolerate dryness. When grown in containers, the substrate should be checked frequently to keep it evenly moist. During the warmest months, it may need daily watering, especially in pots.

Pruning

Regular pruning is not necessary. Only remove dry or damaged stems to keep the plant tidy. If you need to control its spread or height, you can trim the stems to the desired level or grow it in a pot that limits its expansion.
