Description

Oxalis triangularis, also known as purple shamrock or false butterfly plant, is an ornamental plant with triangular leaves arranged in a clover-like pattern. Its characteristic color ranges from deep purple to burgundy, often with lighter markings in the center. It also produces small white or pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the foliage.

Origin

It is native to Brazil and other subtropical regions of South America, where it grows naturally in warm and humid climates.

History

This plant has gained popularity as an ornamental due to its easy care and striking appearance. In some cultures, it is associated with good luck because of its clover-shaped leaves.

Care

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Prolonged direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15–25°C (59–77°F). It does not tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Needs light, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.

Fun Fact

The leaves of Oxalis triangularis are sensitive to light and fold up at night, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty, similar to how some flowers close their petals.

Watering

Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering to prevent bulb rot.

Pruning

No specific pruning is needed, but you can remove dry or damaged leaves to maintain a healthy appearance. If the plant enters dormancy (during winter or unfavorable conditions), cut back the dry leaves and reduce watering until new growth appears.
