Grewia occidentalis

Description

Grewia occidentalis, commonly known as lavender star flower, is an evergreen or semi-evergreen ornamental shrub. It is especially valued for its star-shaped flowers in shades of lilac, mauve, or violet, with very striking yellow stamens in the centre. Its leaves are green, glossy, and oval, and the plant can grow as a compact shrub or be lightly trained as a climber if given support.

Origin

Grewia occidentalis is native to southern Africa, especially parts of South Africa, where it grows in warm and bright environments.

History

Over time, it has become widely used in ornamental gardening because of the beauty of its flowers and its elegant appearance. It is especially appreciated in mild climates, both for gardens and for large containers, patios, and sheltered terraces.

Care

It is a decorative and rewarding plant when grown in suitable conditions.

  • Light: prefers full sun or plenty of light.
  • Soil: needs fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Position: ideal for gardens, patios, terraces, large containers, or near supports.
  • Climate: prefers mild to warm temperatures and should be protected from strong frost.

Watering

Watering should be moderate.

  • During the establishment period, it benefits from regular watering.
  • Once settled, it can tolerate short dry periods.
  • In summer, it appreciates some extra water, especially if grown in a pot.
  • It is important to avoid waterlogging.

Pruning

Pruning helps keep the plant compact and tidy.

  • A light prune after flowering can be carried out.
  • Dry, weak, or untidy branches should be removed.
  • It can also be trimmed to control its size or encourage a denser shape.

Curiosity

One of the most striking qualities of Grewia occidentalis is the star-like shape of its flowers, which gives the plant a delicate and original appearance. In good conditions, it can also produce small decorative fruits, adding extra interest to the plant.
