Hass Avocado
Description
Hass avocado is one of the most widely grown and valued avocado varieties due to the quality of its fruit. It is a perennial fruit tree with dark green, glossy leaves and a dense canopy with moderate growth. The fruit is medium-sized, with rough skin that turns from green to almost black when ripe, and a creamy flesh with a rich flavour.
Origin
The avocado is native to Mesoamerica, mainly Mexico and Guatemala. The Hass variety was developed in the United States from Mexican and Guatemalan avocado selections.
History
The Hass variety is named after Rudolph Hass, a Californian horticulturist who patented it in 1935. Over time, it became the most commercially important avocado variety worldwide thanks to its excellent flavour, good shelf life and resistance to transport.
Curiosity
Unlike many other avocado varieties, Hass fruit darkens as it ripens, making it easier to identify the ideal time for consumption. It is also one of the most commonly used varieties in both home cooking and professional kitchens.
Care
It prefers full sun and a location protected from strong winds. Well-drained, deep and loose soil is essential. The tree is sensitive to excess moisture around the roots, so good drainage is key for healthy growth.
Watering
Regular and moderate watering is required. The soil should be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged. During hot months and fruiting periods, watering should be increased and reduced in winter.
Pruning
Light formative pruning is recommended during the first years to shape the canopy. Later, only maintenance pruning is needed, removing dry, damaged or poorly positioned branches. Heavy pruning should be avoided.
