Prunus domestica (Japanese Plum Tree)

Origin
Despite its common name, Prunus domestica originates from Western Asia and the Caucasus region. Over time, it spread widely throughout Asia and Europe through cultivation and hybridisation.

History
The plum tree is one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees. Its cultivation expanded across Europe due to its adaptability to different climates and the versatility of its fruit, consumed fresh or dried.

Curiosity
It is one of the earliest fruit trees to bloom, covering itself with white or pale pink flowers at the end of winter. This early flowering makes it very ornamental but also vulnerable to late frosts.

Care
A medium-sized fruit tree that requires full sun for good fruit production. It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils. It tolerates moisture better than other stone fruit trees but does not cope well with permanent waterlogging.

Watering
Moderate and regular watering, especially during flowering and fruit development. In summer, the soil should be kept slightly moist, reducing watering in autumn and winter.

Pruning
Pruning is mainly carried out in winter, removing dry, weak or poorly positioned branches and encouraging an open, well-ventilated canopy. A light summer pruning can be done to control vigour and improve light penetration.
