Olea europaea or olive tree is a plant which belongs to the oleaginous family.
It is part of our Mediterranean culture since the beginning of our civilization, forming part, therefore, of our landscape and being symbol of fullness, light, peace, prosperity and joy among many others.
It is a very strong and long-lived tree that adapts itself well to arid and slightly fertile areas, although the production is major if we provide it with the necessary level of fertilization and of irrigation.
With regard to pruning it is best to carry it out in spring, once the cold have passed. Cut back damaged or broken branches, or those ones which do not provide a nice shape to the olive tree. It is also necessary to deprive it from branches which do not provide the tree a proper air circulation, which will help to avoid potential pests and diseases.
To prevent diseases, as much as possible,  do not overwater, and apply the recommended phytosanitary if necessary.
The main varieties of olives in our country are:
'Picual', "Cornicabra", 'Hojiblanca', "Lechín de Sevilla", "Arbequina", and "Weevil"
