Description
Carex buchananii, often sold in nurseries as Carex comans ‘Buchananii’, is an evergreen ornamental grass-like plant valued for its fine foliage in copper, bronze, or cinnamon tones. It forms compact clumps with narrow leaves that are upright at first and then become more arching, often with slightly curled tips. In summer, it may produce discreet flower spikes, although its main ornamental value lies in the colour and texture of its foliage.
Origin
This plant is native to New Zealand, where it grows in open, well-drained environments.
History
Over time, it has become a popular plant in ornamental gardening because of its unusual colour and the movement it brings to borders, rock gardens, and containers. The correct botanical name in many references is Carex buchananii, although in nurseries it is sometimes associated with Carex comans because of its similar appearance.
Care
It is a hardy plant and quite easy to maintain.
- Light: grows well in sun or partial shade. In full sun, the copper colouring is usually more intense.
- Soil: prefers well-drained soil, ideally with some freshness but without becoming waterlogged.
- Position: ideal for rock gardens, borders, pots, contemporary gardens, and combinations with other ornamental grasses or perennials.
- Resistance: it is a low-maintenance plant and quite resilient once established.
Watering
Watering should be moderate.
- During the establishment period, it benefits from regular watering.
- Later, it can tolerate dry periods, although it appreciates some moisture during hot weather.
- It is important to avoid excess water.
Pruning
Pruning is simple.
- Dry or damaged leaves can be removed to keep it looking tidy.
- If it loses its shape over time, it can be given a light trim.
- In general, it needs very little maintenance.
Curiosity
One of its most striking features is its copper-bronze foliage, which stands out especially when backlit or combined with plants that have green, bluish, or silvery leaves. It also keeps its ornamental interest for much of the year thanks to its persistent colour.
