Description

The Persian lime, also known as Citrus x latifolia, is a medium-sized fruit tree that stands out for its seedless, thin-skinned, and juicy fruits. Its limes have a mild, less acidic flavor compared to other varieties, making them perfect for juices, cocktails, and cooking. It has a compact growth habit and dense, aromatic foliage, ideal for gardens or container growing.

Origin
A hybrid citrus developed from the crossbreeding of several citrus species, the Persian lime is widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in Mexico and the United States, where it became popular for its fruit quality and reliability.

History
Intensive cultivation of the Persian lime began in the 20th century due to its resistance to disease and ease of transport. Unlike other lime varieties, it is seedless, which quickly made it the most widely grown commercial lime.

Curiosity
Although commonly referred to as "lime", this variety is seedless and less acidic, making it the preferred choice for drinks like mojitos or classic limeade.

Care
It requires full sun exposure and protection from strong winds. Thrives in warm climates and well-drained soil. In cooler regions, it is best grown in pots so it can be moved to a sheltered spot during the winter months.

Watering and fertilising
During active growth (spring and summer), it needs frequent watering, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. In autumn and winter, watering should be reduced. For healthy growth and good fruit production, apply a citrus-specific fertiliser every 15 to 20 days during the growing season.

Pruning
While pruning is not essential, it can be done at the end of winter to remove damaged branches, open up the canopy and maintain a balanced shape. This will help improve fruit production and overall plant health.
