Cupressus × leylandii (Leyland cypress)

Description
Evergreen conifer with very fast growth, conical habit and dense, deep-green foliage. If left unpruned, it can reach 20–25 metres in height and develop considerable width. It is widely used for tall hedges, privacy screens and windbreaks due to its density and rapid development.

History
This is a relatively modern hybrid. It first appeared naturally in the late 19th century in the United Kingdom and began to be widely used in landscaping during the 20th century, especially in large gardens and areas where quick visual screening was needed.

Origin
It does not occur naturally in the wild as a true species. It is a hybrid between Cupressus macrocarpa and Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, both native to the Pacific coast of North America.

Curiosity
Under favourable conditions, it can grow more than one metre per year. This rapid growth has made it one of the most popular hedge plants, but also one that requires good planning and regular maintenance to avoid excessive size.

Care
Prefers full sun or partial shade and well-drained soils. It is a hardy and adaptable conifer, although it benefits from slightly moist soil during its early years. It tolerates wind and urban conditions well, making it suitable for exposed or suburban areas.

Watering
Regular watering is recommended during the first years after planting to ensure good root establishment, especially in dry climates. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought, although hedges benefit from controlled watering to prevent interior thinning.

Pruning
Essential when used as a hedge. It should be pruned regularly, ideally 2–3 times a year, to control size and maintain density. Avoid cutting back into old wood, as it does not regenerate well from leafless areas. Early and consistent pruning helps prevent future height and width issues.
