General Description:

Quiscualis is a perennial climbing shrub known for its rapid growth under optimal conditions, capable of reaching heights between 3 and 9 meters. It features tomentose branches or scattered pubescence and petioles that can become spiny over time. Its elliptical to oblong leaves, approximately 14 cm in length with a rounded base, remain green throughout the year.

Flowers and Fragrance:

This shrub is distinguished by its flowers, about 7 cm in length, which are initially white in young specimens and later turn purple, emitting a pleasant night-time fragrance. Flowering occurs mainly in the summer and autumn, and the flowers, similar to jasmine, change from white to red as they mature.

Traditional Uses:

In Asia, the seeds of Quiscualis have been traditionally used to combat intestinal parasites. In Cuba, a horchata made from its seeds is used to expel anemones in children, administered with honey or jelly.

Cultural Care:

Quiscualis prefers full sun to partial shade exposure and does not tolerate cold well, only withstanding light and sporadic frosts down to -2ºC. It requires well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and watering should be moderate, avoiding waterlogging.

Pruning and Propagation:

It is advisable to trim the tips during winter to promote denser growth. Propagation is achieved through semi-woody cuttings.

Decorative Aspect:

Quiscualis is particularly valued for its striking flowers that bloom almost all year round, especially abundant in spring. Its exotic appearance makes it an excellent choice for gardens seeking an original and colorful touch.
