Soleirolia

The Soleirolia is a plant of the Urticaceae family, they are herbaceous plants native to the Central Mediterranean. Vulgarly known as Bridal Mattress. They are small perennial plants with translucent stems that do not rise 10 cm high but extend laterally.

The most interesting thing is their compact foliage formed by small shiny leaves that can be yellowish green, light green or with silver spots.

Location:

They are used in indoor pots or in shady areas of patios and terraces and are very suitable for walls in cool areas, in undergrowth or planted in pots with ferns.

This plant needs a semi-shadowy or shady exposure and does not resist direct sun in climates such as the Mediterranean. Although it resists some light frost it is better that in winter it is not below 5 ºC.

Flowering:

The flowers are so inconspicuous that they are of no decorative interest.

Watering:

It is a plant that needs frequent watering, without waterlogging, by putting the pot in a dish and letting it absorb the water and make it have a low lime content.

Pruning:

It should be light to preserve its rounded aspect or to control its expansion as they tend to be invasive.

Fertilizer and soil:

A commercial preparation for indoor use can be used as a soil, to which some coarse sand will be added.

In case of transplanting, a larger size should be made in spring to a pot.

It is better to fertilize in spring and summer every 2 weeks with a mineral fertilizer.

Diseases:

They are quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases.
