Farfugium japonicum, also known as leopard plant, belongs to the Asteraceae family and is native to Japan. This species is particularly popular in shaded gardens and as an indoor plant due to its ornamental foliage.

Description:

Farfugium japonicum is a perennial herbaceous plant that forms dense clumps. It has large, round, glossy leaves that may have smooth or slightly serrated edges. The leaves are typically a deep green, although some varieties feature spots or creamy edges. Its flowers, which appear in autumn, are small, bright yellow, and grouped in umbel-like inflorescences that rise above the foliage.

Care:

This plant is ideal for use in shaded garden borders, rock gardens, covering areas under trees, or in pots on terraces and patios. It prefers semi-shade, though it can tolerate direct sunlight if the soil remains moist. The ideal temperature range is between 50-68°F (10-20°C). Farfugium japonicum prefers rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils. Transplanting, if necessary, is best done from autumn to spring. It requires regular watering during the growing season, with reduced frequency in winter.

Fertilizing:

It benefits from a general application of fertilizer in the garden during spring. During the growing season, it can be supplemented with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks to promote more vigorous growth.

Diseases and Pests:

Farfugium japonicum is generally resistant to diseases and pests. However, it may be susceptible to root rot if the soil does not drain properly. It can also be attacked by snails and slugs that feed on its leaves.

Propagation:

It is easily propagated by division of the clump during spring or autumn. It can also be propagated from seeds, although this method is less common.
