Euphorbia ingens
Description
Euphorbia ingens is a large, tree-like succulent with an upright, branched structure and thick, ribbed, green stems. Its architectural form makes it a striking focal point in gardens and large containers. Although it resembles a cactus, it belongs to the Euphorbia genus and is valued mainly for its sculptural appearance rather than its flowers.
Origin
It is native to southern Africa, where it grows naturally in arid and semi-arid regions with high sun exposure.
History
Euphorbia ingens has been used for centuries in its native regions as a natural living fence and boundary marker due to its height, density and resistance to drought. Over time, it became popular in ornamental gardening and landscaping worldwide, especially in warm and Mediterranean climates.
Curiosity
Despite its cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia ingens is not a cactus. One of its most distinctive features is its white, milky sap, which is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation. This sap also acts as a natural defence against herbivores.
Care
This is a very hardy and low-maintenance plant. It requires plenty of light and performs best in full sun. Well-drained soil is essential, as it does not tolerate excess moisture. It is suitable for outdoor cultivation in warm climates or as a container plant in cooler areas.
Watering
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, watering should be reduced significantly. Euphorbia ingens is highly drought tolerant once established.
Pruning
Pruning is generally not necessary. If needed for size control or safety, prune carefully using gloves and protective eyewear, as the sap is toxic. Pruning is best carried out during warm, dry weather.
